Richmond is one of the most versatile cities for engagement photos. You've got gardens, rivers, cobblestone streets, rooftops, and historic architecture all within a few miles of each other. The hard part isn't finding a good location for your photoshoot. Narrowing the decision down is the more difficult part!
Here are six of my favorite spots right here in RVA, covering every kind of couple. Whether you want something lush and romantic, gritty and urban, or somewhere in between, Richmond has it.
1. Maymont Park
For you if your vibe is: Garden estate, romantic, timeless
Maymont is the most popular engagement session location in Richmond for a reason. The 100-acre Victorian estate gives you Italian gardens with fountains, a Japanese garden with koi ponds and stone bridges, a grand mansion exterior, and wide open lawns. You can get a huge variety of looks all in one place.
One thing to know:
Maymont does not require a photography permit and entry is free, that is great news for couples! However, it also means that weekends get busy. You will be sharing the space with other photographers, especially during spring and fall.
Best time of day:
Early morning is best for privacy and soft light. If you want golden hour though, plan to arrive at least two hours before closing since park hours vary by season.
Best season:
The park is beautiful year-round. Spring brings blooms, fall brings warm tones, and winter strips things back to a clean, moody look.
Parking tip:
I suggest parking at the Hampton Street entrance to be closest to the mansion and Italian Garden. The Japanese Garden is a hike from there, so wear comfortable shoes to walk in.
2. Belle Isle
For you if your vibe is: Rugged, adventurous and quintessentially Richmond
Belle Isle sits right in the middle of the James River and feels like a whole different world apart from the city. You have rocky shorelines, wide sandy beaches, dense trails, and the ruins of a 19th-century ironworks. The pedestrian bridge also gives you the city skyline behind you and the river in front. It is one of the most layered, interesting locations in Richmond.
This spot works especially well for couples who are outdoorsy or do not want anything too polished. It has a raw and real quality that the garden locations just can't give you.
Best time of day:
Golden hour for sure! The light comes through the trees and off the water in a way that is hard to beat.
Best season:
Spring through fall. Summer evenings on the rocks are beyond stunning. It does get crowded on warm weekends however, so plan accordingly.
Parking tip:
Park in the lot off Tredegar Street near the pedestrian bridge. It fills up fast on nice days, so arrive early or plan a backup spot nearby.
3. The Fan / Monument Avenue
For you if your vibe is: Historic, elegant, charming
The Fan is one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Richmond. Victorian row houses line 85 tree-canopied blocks, and Monument Avenue gives you wide, stately streets that photograph beautifully in any direction. In spring, the cherry blossoms along Monument Avenue are exceptional.
This location is perfect if you live in Richmond and want your engagement session to feel like your city. It's familiar and personal without being too casual. It also pairs really well with a second location nearby.
Best time of day:
Late afternoon when the light hits the brick row houses and filters through the tree canopy. It is absolutely chef's kiss!
Best season:
Spring for the blossoms and fall for the foliage. Both are incredibly beautiful here.
Parking tip:
Street parking is available throughout the neighborhood. It can be tight on weekends, but you will usually find something within a block or two.
4. Libby Hill Park
For you if your vibe is: Epic city views, sweeping skyline, and a hidden gem feel
Libby Hill Park sits on a hilltop in Church Hill and gives you one of the best unobstructed views of the stellar Richmond skyline and the James River. The view from this park is actually said to be why the city was named Richmond. That is how good it is.
The park itself has a beautiful ornamental fountain, stone paths, and a staircase that photographs exceptionally well. It is a bit quieter than Maymont or Belle Isle, which means there's a chance you'll have the space to yourselves.
Best time of day:
Golden hour is best here. The sun sets behind the downtown skyline from this vantage point and the light is absolutely magical.
Best season:
Fall is especially beautiful here with warm foliage framing the city views. But the park also works very well year-round!
Parking tip:
Free street parking along E. Franklin Street at 28th. Easy to find and usually available.
5. Shockoe Bottom / Canal Walk
For you if your vibe is: Urban, gritty, and something full of texture and color
Shockoe Bottom is one of Richmond's oldest neighborhoods, and it shows in the best way. Cobblestone streets, old brick warehouses, colorful murals, and the Canal Walk waterfront give you a completely different look than anywhere else on this list. If you want something with an edge, this is your spot.
There are so many different murals along the Canal Walk, so every session here looks a little different. You can move through several distinct backdrops in a short walk. It is great for couples who want variety without having to drive across the city.
Best time of day:
Late afternoon into evening. The warm light on the brick buildings is incredible, and the area truly comes alive as the day winds down.
Best season:
Works any time of year. The urban environment is not as weather-dependent as the outdoor nature spots.
Parking tip:
Parking is available in several lots around the restaurant area near the Canal Walk. Evenings and weekends can get busy, so give yourself a few extra minutes.
6. Virginia State Capitol
For you if your vibe is: Grand, architectural and elegant
The grounds around the Virginia State Capitol are beautiful and often overlooked by couples. The Neoclassical architecture, manicured gardens, wide lawns, and iron fencing give you a backdrop that feels both historic and elegant! It photographs especially well in even, soft light.
It is a public space, so there are no permits or fees required. Weekday mornings are the quietest. The grounds sit right in the heart of downtown, which makes it easy to pair with another nearby location for a two-look session.
Best time of day:
Late afternoon gives you soft, even light on the white columns without harsh shadows. Overcast days also work really well here.
Best season:
The views in spring when the surrounding gardens are in bloom is second to none. The clean architecture also looks striking against winter skies.
Parking tip:
Street parking and metered lots are available nearby. Weekday sessions will have far more parking options than weekends.
Choosing the Right Location for You
The best location for your engagement session is the one that feels like you. Not the most popular spot, not the one everyone else is using. The one that matches your energy as a couple.
If you love being outside and want something with texture and adventure, Belle Isle or Libby Hill will feel right. If you want something elegant and romantic, Maymont or the Capitol grounds deliver that. If you are city people at heart, The Fan or Shockoe Bottom will feel the most natural.
Not sure where to start? That is exactly what I am here for. I have shot at all of these locations and love helping couples figure out where they will feel most at home.
