One of the most common questions I get from couples and families is the famous, “Where should we take our photos?”
And honestly, I get it. Richmond has so much to offer. Greenery, history, city views, river spots, quiet corners, and places that feel very much like the heart of the city. The challenge is choosing a location that not only looks beautiful, but also feels like you.
When I help clients choose a spot, I’m thinking less about perfection and more about vibe. I care about how a place feels, how much variety we’ll have to work with, and whether you can relax and just be yourselves. That’s usually when the best photos happen.
Here are five of my favorite places in Richmond, VA for breathtaking photos.

Capitol Square

Capitol Square is one of those locations that quietly does a lot.
I’ve photographed couples here who wanted a mix of classic architecture and greenery without feeling too staged. You get beautiful historic buildings, tree-lined paths, and subtle city views all in one space. It feels polished but still relaxed at the same time.
What I love most about Capitol Square is the balance. We can move from soft, natural moments surrounded by greenery to more structured, editorial-feeling shots with the architecture. It’s especially great for couples who want their photos to feel timeless but not stiff.

Maymont Park

Maymont is popular for a reason. It’s beautiful.
I’ve shot engagement sessions here that feel completely different depending on where we are in the park. Lush gardens, stone pathways, water features, and grand architecture all exist within the same space. The variety here is unmatched.
Yes, it can be a little busy at times, but there are quieter pockets that photograph beautifully if you know where to go. I love Maymont for couples who want romantic, almost storybook-feeling images with a lot of visual interest. There’s always somewhere new to explore, and every session here feels slightly different.

Shockoe Bottom

If you love the city and want your photos to feel alive, Shockoe Bottom is incredibly difficult to beat.
I’ve photographed couples here who wanted something urban, real, and unmistakably Richmond. Brick walls, historic streets, and layered city backdrops give this area so much character. It feels like the heartbeat of the city.
Shockoe Bottom works especially well for couples who feel at home downtown and want their photos to reflect that energy. It’s less about greenery and more about texture, movement, and atmosphere.

The Great Shiplock Park

Now this is one of my favorite hidden gems.
I photographed a family session here, and what stood out most was how much variety we had without ever feeling rushed. You get river views, trees and fields, and subtle city elements all in one walkable area.
Great Shiplock Park feels peaceful without feeling removed from the city. It’s ideal for families or couples who want a calm environment where they can move naturally, interact, and not feel like they’re on display. It’s relaxed, scenic, and quietly beautiful.

Main Street Station

Main Street Station is truly something special.
I’ve photographed both an engagement session and a wedding here, and every time I’m reminded how much history this place holds. The architecture alone is stunning, but what really makes it shine is the mix of interior elegance and exterior city views.
This location is perfect for couples who love rich history, dramatic backdrops, and a sense of place. There’s so much variety here that it allows a session to unfold naturally, from intimate moments to bold, cinematic images.
A Final Thought
Ultimately, the best place to take your photos is the one where you feel comfortable enough to be yourselves.
Richmond has no shortage of beautiful locations, but what matters most is choosing a space that fits your energy, your connection, and the way you move together. When that clicks, everything else falls into place.
If you’re planning photos in Richmond, I hope this gives you a starting point and maybe helps the city feel a little less overwhelming and a little more inviting.
